presenting a solid front on this vital question of preventing any action tending to dismember customs principle, forcible protection of which against pro- vincial interference at treaty ports is, I presume, fully concurred in by His Majesty's Government in spite of threats of retaliation against our commercial interests which need not I think be taken too seriously in view of Sun Yat-sen's precarious position and in- creasing loss of influence and popularity.
Preservation of customs administration intact is I venture to submit in the long run of greater im- portance to these interests than maintenance of good relations with Sun Yat-sen.
